Year 8’s Visit from Blake NZ

On the 18th of May, Year 8 students stepped out of the “classroom” and into waterways across New Zealand, all thanks to the Blake Foundation.

Blake NZ came with enough VR headsets for each student to experience what lurks below the water’s surface around the North Island.

This exciting learning opportunity is the kick start to our Inquiry topic that is focused on the connections we have to our environment. Our Inquiry also includes local history and local people around Leeston with an emphasis on connection.

The idea is that students will learn all about Ellesmere and the Selwyn district which will inspire students to lead change in our community.

We saw first hand the toll pollution and overfishing takes on our moana and kaimoana. We explored what a healthy ocean ecosystem looks like and what an unhealthy one looks like.

The students were appalled with the state of these and understand the small steps that they can take to stop any more harm.

Ask your child about these steps and see if as a family you can help limit the damage.

Stay tuned for more updates of our learning as the term progresses.
