Year 10 Ako

We are well into Term 3 now and the Y10 staff and students are starting to feel the benefit of the days getting a little longer again.

This term we are working hard on topics inspired by an array of treaties that New Zealand has entered into.

These range from The Antarctic Treaty leading us into work on climate change to exploring the causes and effects of The Friendship Treaty with Samoa and of course, the implications of Te Tiriti. In PE students have opted in to explore an unfamiliar sport.

They are developing new skills in Frisbee, Korfball or gymnastics whilst continuing to work on their resilience and interpersonal skills.

It is great to be fully staffed again in the Y10 Ako team and would like to take the opportunity to let the new team members introduce themselves…

Mr McCarthy: Kia Ora, I join Ellesmere College having had 15 years of teaching experience both locally and in the UK. I have three young children which take up most of my time(and energy!).

I’m a big sports fan and have grown up playing a wide range of sports including cricket, rugby, basketball, and football. I enjoy running in my spare time away from school and also supporting my family in their chosen passions and interests. I am enjoying being part of the Te Waihora whanau and working alongside our rangitahi here to achieve their goals.

Hollie Steven: In the first week of term, five members from the Rural Health Careers program came to our school to speak to us students in year 10 about pursuing a career in a medical field, and what that looks like in rural areas.

We were taken through a slideshow of information, such as pay, hours, and how long it takes to study in each particular field.

We also learnt how important and in demand medical workers are. We then began the activities that had been prepared for us. These included; taking our blood pressure, testing reflexes, making a cast of teeth using a mould and writing in a mirror (to simulate working like a dentist).

These activities were used to help us understand what its like working in different medical fields such as GP doctors, dentistry, nursing and podiatry. It was also used to help us to understand what we would like to do after our time at Ellesmere College.

This comes in preparation for choosing our year 11 subjects as we are starting to think about our careers after school.
