Sports Report August 2023

Although the frosts seem to be still coming thick and fast, winter sport is in wind down mode at the College for Secondary competitions.

The season has been good although winter weather and disruptions through things like industrial action have been significant in some cases.

Our Senior A Netball team will be our only team to go to the South Island Secondary Schools tournament which will be held in a couple of weeks time. We wish this close knit team well under the management of our community coaches Charlotte Lemon, Deb Johnson and Carey Barnett with Maree Lemon attending as an umpire.

We owe so much to our volunteers from the community who give up their time so generously and without this we would not be able to run a senior netball program.

It's been awesome to see the progress of some of the other teams and its been unique for us to have two teams, a junior and a senior involved and competitive in the Mixed Open Grade. This allows us to be able to play boys in our Netball teams and we expect this to grow even further in seasons to come.

Look out for some action photos in this edition from a lovely days play the other week although the wind was absolutely piercing!

Football for Year 9 and 10 has seen a revival this year albeit in Division three, but we are right up the top of that! We are now looking at maybe setting up some Indoor Football teams for the Summer months based on this enthusiastic interest from our Year 9 and 10 students.

It was awesome to see our Friday night Senior Boys Basketball team getting their first win of the season last Friday night. Well done lads! Under the guidance of Mr Price, they have worked hard as a team after introducing a number of new players this season and have not had the luxury of lots of subs to call on from the bench

The Year 7 and 8 Sport continues in full force with a new ‘season’ in place on Thursday afternoons. The Monday night Selwyn Basketball continues for a few more weeks at the fantastic Rolleston Sports Centre.

Good luck to the 18 students that have entered in the 2023 Smiths City Mud Sweat and Tears Challenge at the Christchurch Adventure Park. Go well!!
