Year 8 Ako

Welcome back to Term 2.

We began the Term by delving deeper into Anzac Day, and the people involved at the time. We looked closely at the perspectives and experiences of the ANZAC soldiers, the nurses and the enemy, linking this knowledge to the historical facts of the time.

Our ākonga are starting our new inquiry, which will work through four strands linked to Waihora (Lake Ellesmere). We’ll be studying the lake and river ecosystems, the purakau linked to the area, and the recent historical and environmental changes in the area. Our literacy skills will all be related to this topic area. We are excited to have the BlakeNZ Virtual Reality Experience coming to 8Ako next week for all students to kick off our inquiry.

Winter sports are about to kick off for 8Ako, with the first games on the 25th May. Whilst our teams are at Hagley, the remaining year 8s and year 7s link up for joint PE and fitness. Here are some photos of last week’s fun!

Please help us out at school by making sure that your child has all the correct equipment every day at school. Many of our students are turning up to 8Ako and CLMs with no pens, pencils, rulers etc and uncharged devices. We will contact you directly if this is a repeated problem so that you can talk about it at home. With thanks in anticipation for your assistance.
