Year 7 Ako

We are now well into Term 4 and the holidays are a distant memory!

We have been spending alot of our Ako time working through our Rugby World Cup inquiry, which has English, Maths, Social Sciences and Physical Education integrated into it. Students have been working through a range of tasks earning points for their ‘country’ and just like the actual competition there will be a winning country at the end! As a team we have found this inquiry to have high engagement, enjoyment and our RISE values at the forefront which has been pleasing to see. Some feedback from the teachers:

Miss Riedel - “The students have been working hard on their inquiry over the past few weeks to get points for their country, avoid penalties and hopefully win the Rugby World Cup across 7Ako. It has been amazing to see the students, in their teams, working together across all three classes and helping each other to complete tasks or understand a sport better. As the inquiry begins to wrap it will be a nail-biting, edge-of-the-couch sort of final with every moment counting towards what could be the greatest 7Ako win of all time.”

Miss Butler - “The engagement from the students throughout this inquiry has been positive including in and out of the classroom. I have enjoyed seeing everyone bring forward their strengths and contribute to a team with so much enthusiasm and sportsmanship”.

Mr Morton - “The year 7 cohort has hit our latest RWC inquiry head on. All teams are very competitive and working together with a lot of synergy. Students are striving to build points for their inter- cohort teams and producing some brilliant work. During Physical Education, teams are galvanising and competing at a very high level”.

Mrs Jonker - “The Year 7 students are having a blast as they dive into the exhilarating world of the Rugby World Cup, all while sharpening their math skills! In the classroom, we are not just watching the games; we are delving into the fascinating world of rugby statistics. From exploring which team has scored the most tries to uncovering who’s making the most tackles, we are putting our maths knowledge to the test. Students are learning to represent this data using various types of graphs and charts, making maths come alive through their favourite sport. But the excitement doesn’t stop there! Our young mathletes are also using their newfound skills to predict the eventual World Cup champion. Students are using diverse mathematical approaches, from probability to statistical analysis, to make educated guesses about the tournament’s winner."

Mrs Van Oudtshoorn - “The RWC inquiry brought about great team spirit among the year 7 students. A healthy dose of competition is keeping them actively engaged both on and off the field. With the inquiry covering so many different educational bases, there is something for everyone to excel in”.

You will all have received the permission slips for camp and they are coming in thick and fast. If you are still to sign this please do so over the weekend so I can let Woodend know on Monday our final numbers for catering. If you have any questions about camp please don’t hesitate to email me.

Go the All Blacks!
