Year 7 Ako

Year 7 are spending their Thursday and Friday afternoons in Ako working through an Arts Curriculum rotation and by the end of the year they will have spent some time learning about Music, Dance, Drama and Art. This is currently what they have been doing this term.

We are looking forward to seeing everyone at next week’s exhibition evening so our students can show off what else they have been doing during Year 7 Ako.

In 7RL, students have been learning about music as a part of their arts rotation. On Thursday, the students played a game called ‘Musical Drawing’ where the students listen to music and draw while it is playing, when the music changes they pass their piece of paper on to the next person until their original drawing comes back around to them. The rest of the lesson explored how music can influence our emotions and how music can have several different purposes depending on what we use it for.

In 7BU, students have been engaging in both drama and dance as part of their arts rotation. For dance, students have been learning “Just Dance” videos in small groups. As for Drama, they are able to play a range of games aimed to build their confidence, teamwork and acting. On Thursday, students played ‘10 second object’ where they were randomised in groups and must quickly work together to make an object using their bodies. It has been great to see how enthusiastic the students in 7BU have been and how much progress they have made already.

In 7AM, students have been creating some artwork based on the theme of Kiwiana, looking at their own Culture and Identity. Their task is to create a billboard that would be displayed at the arrivals gate at Christchurch International Airport displaying to international travellers some of New Zealand's unique cultural artefacts. During this project, students discussed and researched kiwiana, and have chosen pieces that resonated with their identity to display on their billboard. Students are learning about colour schemes like complementary and contrasting colours, as well as content structuring for the best aesthetic appeal.
