Primary Schools Athletics Championships 2024

Sarah Hughey and Tina Moody —

It was with pleasure that we accompanied 15 year 5 and 6 children from our school to compete in this event. The event was held at Nga Puna Wai and a total of 1800 children participated in this event from the wider Canterbury region.

We had 3 relay teams qualify and then the rest were individuals carrying out a variety of disciplines on either the track or field. It was an event where children were encouraged to manage themselves, heading off independently to their events and managing themselves when waiting for their turn.  It was great to see children mixing with children from other schools and some children even bumped into old friends from Kindergarten days.

The competition was tough, with children performing to a high level.  The children from Elmwood did exceptionally well and it was great to hear that some achieved their Personal Best (PB), for others it was not to be their day - but that is all part of competing at a higher level - successes or not, it is impressive to have qualified for this competition.

We have a few certificates to hand out to those children that gained a placement and these will be given out in the Celebration Assembly on Thursday 12th December.

Year 5 Girls Relay Team: 1st Place to  Louise, Hazel, Narandhini, Piper

Year 6 Girls 60 m race: 2nd Place to Leah

Year 5 Girls 800 m race: 2nd Place to Louise

Year 6 Girls High Jump: 3rd Place to Iris

Congratulations to all children that participated, we are all very proud of you.

Finally we would like to say a special thank you to the parents/whanau who provided transport, came along and supported their children and others.  It made life so much easier on many accounts.  Thank you.
