Board Talk - By Andy Lamont

Andy Lamont —

Welcome to the May Board Talk. As always, our aim is to provide you with some key takeaways from our recent board meeting from a board member’s perspective.

For more detailed information, please refer to the official meeting minutes, which will be posted on the school website after our next board meeting.

Property Update – Kahikatea Block Retained

The Ministry of Education has confirmed that Block 1 (Kahikatea), our large two-story building, will be retained. A progression plan for its maintenance and upkeep will be presented to the board once due diligence has been completed and a robust plan is in place.

With Rimu Block, soon-to-be-completed Matai Block along with Kahikatea, we’re excited about the resulting unobstructed views across the fields and playgrounds that will be achieved. This end plan aligns with our preferred master plan that we laid out more than three years ago. More details will be shared in future meetings as we gain more clarity on this.

Auditorium Roof Renewal

Over the Easter break, a new waterproof membrane was installed on the Auditorium roof. We’d like to give a big shout-out to Kevin Kearney and his business Watertight Logistics, for his exceptional work. He prioritized our project, delivered it under budget, and passed the savings back to the school. This upgrade ensures long-term performance and alleviates ongoing R&M concerns, especially as the majority of this building is owned by the board.

Board Succession Planning

This year’s board elections will see at least three members, including myself, stepping down.

As a parent of three girls and having served for six years, this role has given me valuable insight into our education system and what our school must navigate under varying government policies. It has also highlighted the vital role the board plays in ensuring our Tamariki have the best start in their learning journey, supported by an incredibly talented and dedicated team of educators and support staff.

Serving on the board has been a true honour. It has been made even more meaningful by the support of my fellow board members and like-minded parents who have stood strong during tough times, always prioritizing what’s best for our school and teaching staff. Their commitment has helped create an environment where our children can thrive and leave Elmwood with the skills and foundation for the next stage of their learning development. It has also allowed me in a small way to leave my mark on the school that has given so much to my children notwithstanding the connections and lifelong friendships my family and I have made on our journey through the school.

If you are open to making a difference in our school community and would like to explore the opportunity of joining the board, reach out to any one of us or keep an eye out for some future information evenings that we will host. These sessions will provide insight into this rewarding and selfless role and perhaps like me allow you to leave your mark on our fantastic school, future generations and the incredible educators that serve our children.

Wishing you all the best.
