Elmwood Reception —

Students in Ruru Rua have been embracing our ‘Design and Innovation’ unit through the completion of our Science Badges.

There are 4 different areas involved in Science Badges: The Living World, Planet Earth and Beyond, The Material World and the Physical World. Students need to complete 8 tasks to gain their Science Badge.

Last term, our class dove into an exciting project where we researched, designed, and built rockets using soft drink bottles.

Students spent a lot of time experimenting with wing shapes and nozzle designs to create rockets that could soar the furthest distance. Launch day was a highlight, filled with fun and laughter as we watched each creation take off and assessed which design elements contributed to the most successful flights. It was a fantastic hands-on learning experience that brought science and teamwork to life!

In addition, students took their learning even further by independently conducting experiments at home, bringing so much curiosity and excitement into each project! From building and exploding volcanoes, to planting seeds and measuring growth, to exploring recycling and testing which objects float or sink, they have truly immersed themselves in Science. It’s been incredible to see them apply new skills, share discoveries with the class, and develop a real passion for hands-on learning.
