Year 6 Camp - Wainui

Fendalton School —

Below are 2 recounts and some of the fabulous photos of the Year 6 camp in Wainui. The faces and the smiles say it all.

WAINUI CAMP

November 2nd 2020 was the day year 6 set off for Wainui camp. When I came to school that day I saw cars on the field, I asked my teacher,” Where do I put my bag?”. I put my bag on the trailer and hoped I’d be able to find it again when we got to Wainui.” Mrs R gave us a safety briefing then finally we were on our way to camp.

We told terrible jokes or at least I did in the car. Finally, we arrived and went straight into the first activity. For me kayaking was really fun. I tried standing up and I fell over in the water. Kayaking was one of my favourite activities as well as coasteering and archery.

Later that day we did coasteering. Coasteering is basically jumping off rocks into the water. There were three levels. There was a baby bear (level 1) that was mostly covered in water then Mumma bear (level2) and the tide was too low for level 3 the Papa bear.

That night we had lasagne, carrot sticks, salad and garlic bread for dinner. It was delicious. After dinner, we had wide games which were a bunch of games like non-stop tag and tribal colours. We did this to make us get tired and go to sleep quietly.

Day 2 November 3rd 7:30 breakfast.

We had toast, hash browns and scrambled eggs. After breakfast group 6, my group did search and rescue. In search and rescue, we had to find a dummy called Bob however we didn’t do very well with the rescue bit. We hit his head into a tree and cracked his neck. Personally, the navigator didn’t do very well with tracking where we were.

We called on our courage to attempt the high ropes in the rain. It was more fun and I felt safer because we could slide our feet on the ropes instead of walking which was more frightening. After high ropes, we went in for lunch of salad rolls.

Outdoor living was really fun. We made fires and huts. My fire didn’t light because the technique wasn't right. The hut we made was better than the girls’ hut. The structure of ours was stronger but the girls’ could hold more people.

For dinner that night we had burgers. We went out for a campfire and roasted marshmallows. My marshmallow failed twice by falling off. We danced the conga -cha cha- back to camp.

November 4th 3rd day at camp breakfast same as the 2nd day.

My first activity for today was archery. Archery was really fun because I hit a yellow, the highest scored colour. After a bit of fun practising, we started a game. If you get yellow you would go to France, red is Fiji, blue is Japan, black is school and white is a really dirty kitchen.

On the way back to school we went to one of my friend's family gardens. It had native trees and fruit trees like mandarin and apple. Then we stopped to get ice blocks.

Wainui Camp

Possibly the main reason that year 6 went on camp to Wainui was to learn leadership. The camp consisted of outdoor living skills, Archey, search & rescue, kayaking, high ropes and coasteering.

The car or minibus I travelled in was quite nice. Definitely, the road trip had its quarks to it. But not really anything terrible.

The most favoured activity for me was outdoor living skills. Outdoor living skills had to offer the skills of building a fire and building huts with sticks and logs. Whilst doing those activities I learned how to survive in the wilderness.

For dinner, we had salad, lasagne and garlic bread. The food was delicious. My favourite was lasagne but the garlic bread was a close second place.

After that, at night time we had to get into our pj’s, grab our soft toys to go watch the mini-movie of camp.

As we watched we reflected on our first day of camp.

Finally, the day was over and we could go and rest as we rethought the first few things we did on camp. Now I know how to build huts out of things in the forest, build fires and learn to shoot a bow and arrow. That was my first night at camp Wainui.
