Fendalton School —

Fendalton Open-air school has an amazing library filled with a large collection of books.

Check out our amazing library blog: library.fendalton.school.nz

The library is arranged into different areas including:

  • picture books

  • fiction novels (sorted into two levels of difficulty)

  • non-fiction books

  • reference books

  • comics, maze books and puzzle books

  • bilingual books and books with audio CDs recommended for new English Language Learners

  • books for parents on education and child development topics

  • bilingual parent information packs

  • teacher books and resources

The library is open from 8.45am to 3.00pm. The students are usually brought to the library once a week with their class however they are welcome to visit the library during lunchtimes and may work independently in the library during class time with the permission of their teacher.

It is recommended that students in New Entrants, Year 1 and Year 2 borrow two books at a time, however, the Middle and Senior School students may borrow up to five books. The books are issued for two weeks. The students are encouraged to care for these by using their reading folder to transport them in their bag and by storing them away from food and drink.

At the beginning of the school year, Year 6 students may apply to be Student Librarians. Student Librarians assist with general library duties such as preparing new books for the shelves, issuing and returning books and reviewing books for the library blog.

Parents are welcome to browse in the library between 8.45-9.00am. We ask that you do not come into the library during learning time. Parents may borrow books under their child’s name.

We are privileged to employ Desna Wallace, our school librarian. She is a highly qualified, published children’s author and has a vast knowledge of books. She is very happy to help parents and students locate specific books.

Every second year the school holds a Book Week celebration. At this time the classes work on activities to promote and extend student’s love of books.
