Fernside Cycling Tops

Natasha Richardson —

A big thank-you to Lyall Park Joinery and Chain Reaction Cycles

Getting cycle tops for the kids was Nardia's brainchild and I was dragged along for the ride.

For fundraising we sourced Cliff Bars at a reduced cost and on sold for a profit. This was a pretty successful start.

I had an enquiry from Michelle and Mark Birdling of Lyall Park Joinery as to how many tops we were after and the cost, Darryn Giles of Chain Reaction Cycles also jumped on board. After trying to sort out how to acknowledge  our sponsors on the shirts (which was very stressful) we were informed that Cycling NZ deems no sponsors to be on the kids tops at all. This made designing the shirts much easier, but we now had to go back and explain to both sponsors that they would not be on the shirts. Both Lyall Park Joinery and Chain Reaction Cycles where more than happy to continue with sponsorship.

To get around the lack of visual sponsors on the tops Maximum Effects Signs made us a banner, so each time the tops are used we will proudly display our banner. Our intention is to use the tops for the Canterbury Primary Schools Duathalons and Triathlons as well as schools cycling (road and mountain biking), the Huxster and any other events that the kids represent the school at involving cycling.

Also a thank you to Brendon from Canterbury Upholstery who put the finishing touches to the banner for us. Without the amazing generosity of both Chain Reaction Cycles and Lyall Park Joinery the tops would still be a dream rather than what is now our reality.

Kirsty Watts got to showcase hers at Blenheim during her brilliant effort over the weekend at the Schools Cycling NZ Southern Tour.

Twelve tops were purchased which is what we thought would be enough , now with the popularity of our newly formed Bike Club it may not be. Might back to the drawing board to purchase more.
