PE & Health (Including Outdoor Education) & Sport

Fernside School - March 3, 2025

At Fernside School there is a strong emphasis on PE & Health, & Sport. Both areas have been identified as areas of specialist resourcing and specialist teaching. The Fernside School Board of Trustees employ a specialist teacher, Annabel Wilson, to teach PE and co-ordinate Sports coaching and administration for students in years 5 - 8.

The students are well served by the programme, the resourcing and the specialist teaching. Equally as important are the other staff members and parents who assist with the coaching and managing of teams. Parents are a valued part of the Sports’ Programme with their coaching and umpiring, and organizational abilities and efforts.

Our School has strong links to the Community and Community Recreational Groups. Our School Basketball and miniball teams play in local competitions, while parents support teams of Fernside children to play Rugby Touch, Summer Hockey, Twilight Football in local competitions. We have strong links to the inground Fernside Tennis and Fernside Netball Clubs.

The Fernside Community Hall and grounds are used by Fernside Tennis, Basketball, and Netball Clubs, Zumba, Ballet, Karate and Bowls groups. We are lucky to also have playgrounds, a bike track, a pool, and a field that the Community use outside School hours.

In addition to PE & Health, Year 5 - 8 students participate in a variety of organised programmes that provide pathways and opportunities to representative sport – North Canterbury (NC or our NC Zone, Rakahuri) and Canterbury. The regular annual events are:

swimming, aquatic skills passes, triathlon, duathlon, winter & summer sports tournaments, cross-country, athletics, basketball, and mountain biking. External sports’ organisations are invited into the School or we travel to other environments and venues on a biannual basis. Some of the regular activities include: camping, gymnastics and trampolining, high-ropes, surfing, korfball, sailing, golf, cricket, skating, fun runs, alpine skiing and football.

Gearing students up for PE at Fernside School

The following gear will allow students to participate in physical activity in a comfortable, healthy and safe way:

  • School Tee shirt or Sports shirt *

  • Navy blue shorts *

  • Sports shoes*

  • Hats & caps

  • Sun block

  • Named Water bottle

  • Optional: sunglasses

*Fernside School sports’ shirts are available at the School office (new or preloved). The sports’ shirts come accented in the four house colours as in the picture above. On the back they are printed in jade with the name of the school. They are compulsory for P.E., Sports’ Interchange and all Representative Sport.

*Shorts are to be above the knee and made of fabric that allows for full movement. We recommend the navy blue techno-dry shorts from The Warehouse. They are also the shorts required for School Sport, the Fernside Tennis Club and the Fernside School Basketball Club. (No singlet tops or 3/4 pants please).

*Sports’ shoes are necessary to support feet and protect them when on asphalt, on shingle and using equipment (bare feet are sometimes adequate for some field activities). Sandals and Crocs are not suitable for PE or Sport.
