David Taylor —

We have had a very successful first term and despite it spanning eleven weeks, it has gone very quickly. An nice Easter break has probably contributed to the relaxed and calm end to the term.

My thanks to all the school staff for their efforts. It is ultimately their hard work in planning and delivering a school programme that makes everything work. We have seen a particularly strong emphasis on Physical Education. This is obviously aided by our upgraded swimming pool as well as a strong classroom emphasis on summer fitness and games. We can already see positive gains in other learning as a result.

My thanks  to all members of the school community who have taken the risk and attempted a Te Reo acknowledgement as they enter and leave the school. It is nerve wracking trying new things and I applaud your efforts. I'm obviously a real beginner myself so a case of learning together. Ka pai!

A huge thank you also goes out to the parent helpers who accompanied the Wheki students on their recent sailing and Art Gallery visits. For rurally located school students, these out of school experiences are vital.

Looking forward to next term, the most obvious change will be a building upgrade in Waekura. (Our Admin block.) This is funded by the Ministry of Education an is long overdue. It will entail  changes to Sandi’s Office, the small school staffroom and Andrews office.

Work will commence here on the first day of the school holidays. Building contractors  Waghorn Builders will by erecting security fencing this Friday afternoon, the last day of school.

The programme of work is scheduled for four weeks, but we have pessimistically programmed for six weeks ending week four off term 2. This schedule will require the staff and school community doing things a little differently as we enter and leave the front of school. We will keep you well informed via Memos.

Another big event for next term will be the Yr 7/8 camp to Hanmer Springs. We know the children are excited as are the many  parent volunteers. I'm sure it will be a highlight for all.

We can also highlight the PTA event Amazing Race Sunday May 16th. This should be a real highlight and one for the whole school community to be involved.

Enjoy the school holidays and I look forward to welcoming everyone back safe and sound next term.

Ngai mihi nui
