Startup Weekend - Blood, sweat and a few tears.

Rebecca Twemlow —

54 hours, 50 attendees and 7 teams - the perfect mix to create a business?

Dunedin’s Startup Weekend Successful but not without it's challenges. It was a gruelling 54 hour weekend of building businesses on Sunday, March 29th, Startup Weekend Dunedin 2015, it did end on a high note though - outstanding pitches from polished teams.

With over 50 attendees a mix of local business people, students, developers, and designers from the Otago region - all supported by a dozen entrepreneurs from around New Zealand playing the mentoring role them over the weekend.

All seven teams that participated had viable ideas, but the winner of the event selected by a panel of judges on Sunday night was VÖR, a startup that promises to solve the problem of dangerous drivers on New Zealand roads. Their software was designed and built over the weekend to be installed in any vehicle, and uses GPS information and computer imaging to alert rental car companies to any erratic behaviour by drivers. Road rules can also be delivered in drivers’ native languages through the app if necessary.
