Swimming

Aoraki Swimming Championships are coming up on May 26th 2023. This is for our year 9-13 swimmers. This year they are being held in Ashburton.

Cycling

Kyra Marett competed at the National road championships in the holidays. Kyra won the silver medal in the un17 girls time trial on Friday. Then backed it up to win the silver medal in the un17 girls road race on Saturday.

Halberg Games

In the middle week of the school holidays Charlotte Walker and her team mate Finn from Timaru went to Auckland to represent South Canterbury in a small team of two at the Halberg Games, previously known as the Youth Disability games. This is a sporting extravaganza with competitive and non competitive sports of all sorts. Charlotte made South Canterbury proud.

She was first in her 50m and 100m sprint races and second by 0.06 of a second in her 25m freestyle in swimming. She was also 3rd in the backstroke and 3rd in the 75m medley (no butterfly).

Participation and fun is the focus of the games so Charlotte took part in wheelchair rugby which she loves and scored 6 goals, and Boccia, a seated bowls game on Sunday.

Hopefully a bigger South Canterbury team next April.

Inline Speed Skating

This year during Easter I (Grace Worner) took part in a competition for inline speed skating for the Oceania championships. It was held in Brisbane, Australia. In the New Zealand team there were 30 skaters who travelled over to Brisbane. I competed in 6 races over 3 days but all of the shorter races had heats and finals which made it around 10 races. I really enjoyed the 5km elimination and points races the most and I really loved travelling away with the New Zealand team. I came away with a Gold medal in the 5km elimination and in the 5km points race. My relay team won Gold in the 3km relay race and I got a bronze medal in the 21km half marathon. I jointly received the reward for top overall cadet (my skating grade) with my friend Kyla Beverage from Timaru. I was very happy with my results and I hope to be selected to go to Oceania’s again next year.
