Mathematics & Statistics
ONE - Intermediate
Code: L1MIT
Course Description
This course covers the strands of Algebra & Number, Measurement & Geometry, and Statistics & Probability. In a range of meaningful contexts, you will be engaged in thinking mathematically and statistically. This course has less algebra content than the Advanced Level 1 Mathematics course (L1MAT). You will solve problems, model solutions and communicate your findings.
This course fits most Vocational Pathways.
Course of Study
This course contributes NCEA Level 1 credits.
Assessment
A combination of internal and external standards allowing up to 20 credits.
Costs
Students are required to have their own calculators for this course. If a student is intending on doing further study in Mathematics, a Casio fx9860 graphics calculator (approximately $140) is recommended. A Casio fx82 scientific calculator (approximately $40) is recommended for students not planning on studying Mathematics beyond Level 1.
LEVEL ONE - Advanced
Code: L1MAT
Course Description
This course covers the strands of Algebra & Number, Measurement & Geometry, and Statistics & Probability. In a range of meaningful contexts, you will be engaged in thinking mathematically and statistically. This course focuses heavily on algebraic and technical mathematical skills. You will solve problems, model solutions and communicate your findings.
This course fits most Vocational Pathways.

A Casio fx82 scientific calculator (approximately $40) is recommended for students not planning on studying Mathematics beyond Level 1.
Entry Criteria
Completion of Y10 Mathematics Reasonable level of literacy, and a passing grade on the new NCEA Level 1 Numeracy corequisite assessment (US 32406) which students sit in term 4 of year 10.
LEVEL TWO - Intermediate
Code: L2MIT
Course Description
This course is designed for you if you wish to pursue a career needing above Level 1 Mathematics, and wish to round off your education with a solid grounding in “Working Mathematics”. The course is based around developing practical problem solving skills and equipping you to confidently handle Mathematics you may come across in your job or other activities. It is recommended that at least 60% of Year 12 students opt for this Mathematics course. This course also allows you to gain the Level 2 Mathematics credits which are required for entry to many courses of further study and occupations. This course fits most Vocational Pathways.
Course of Study
This is a Level 2 course with standards covering algebra, trigonometry, probability and statistics..
Assessment
A combination of Internal and External standards allowing up to 17 credits. All standards are linked to Numeracy Level 1. The Statistics standards are linked to Literacy.
Costs
A Casio fx9860 graphics calculator (approximately $140) will be required by students taking this course.
Entry Criteria
Students will need to have obtained at least 14 credits from Level 1 NCEA Maths Achievement Standards. Further entry will be at the discretion of the Mathematics staff.
LEVEL TWO - Advanced
Code: L2MAT
Course Description
This course is strongly recommended for you if you wish to pursue tertiary study for a career which uses Mathematics heavily (e.g. health sciences, medicine, engineering, architecture, economics, computer science). It has more of an algebraic focus than the L2MIT course and introduces students to the mathematical modeling tools in calculus (a natural extension of coordinate geometry and algebra with extensive real world applications). You will be required to solve problems in a logical manner and report your findings in a clear and precise way. This course fits most Vocational Pathways.
Course of Study
This is a Level 2 course with standards covering algebra, trigonometry, probability, statistics and an introduction to calculus..
Assessment
A combination of internal and external standards allowing up to 21 credits.
Costs
A Casio fx9860 graphics calculator (approximately $140) will be required by students taking this course.
Entry Criteria
Students will need to have completed a full Level 1 Mathematics course gaining at least 16 credits. For automatic entry they will need to have gained an Achieved or higher in a Level 1 Mathematics external. Further entry will be at the discretion of the Mathematics staff.
LEVEL THREE - Mathematics with Statistics
Code: L3MAS
Course of Study
This course gives you skills to continue on to University in any field with a basic understanding of statistics together with algebraic processes to solve simultaneous equations, and network methods, that have applications in many fields. You may opt to take this course together with the Mathematics with Calculus course as they complement each other. This course fits most Vocational Pathways.
Assessment
A combination of internal and external standards allowing up to 19 credits.
Some of the internal credits contribute towards UE Literacy.
Costs
A Casio fx9860 graphics calculator (approximately $140) will be required by students taking this course
Entry Criteria
You will need to have obtained at least 12 credits from Level 2 NCEA Mathematics Achievement Standards. Gaining at least an Achieved on the Probability AS 2.12 external provides automatic entry to this course. Further entry will be at the discretion of the Mathematics staff.
LEVEL THREE - Mathematics with Calculus
Code: L3MAC
Course of Study
The course consists of algebra, trigonometry and geometry based internal standards, together with two calculus based external standards. The calculus standards build on the introduction in the Level 2 Advanced Mathematics course and incorporates many practical applications. This course is strongly recommended for you if you wish to pursue tertiary study for a career which uses Mathematics heavily (e.g. health sciences, medicine, engineering, architecture, economics, computer science)You may opt to take this course together with the Mathematics with Statistics course as they complement each other.
