Sports Department —

This is our final update from the Sports office for 2023. It has been a busy year with events and this term has been no exception.

We started the term with our Sports and Cultural awards night and we have had numerous events during the term including summer quad, junior sports week, and finishing off the year with athletics.

I wish you all well for the summer break and look forward to more great sporting events in 2024.

Sports Updates

Sports and Cultural Awards

This was held at the start of term and was an excellent night. It was awesome to see so many of our students gain sports blues and cups for outstanding performance throughout the year.

The guest speakers, Hami Goldsmith and Archie Chisholm both had good messages for the students whilst sharing their journeys.

It was particularly pleasant to see so many teams enter the team of the year category. Congratulations to Aidan Christie and Quinn Foley-Smith who took out the team of the year for their Fencing achievements.

The Metcalf Trophy

This trophy is awarded to the overall senior sportsperson at GHS for the year. This year's recipient was Kristin Schoneveld. Congratulations Kristin and we wish you well in your future sporting endeavours.

Uniforms

We have had a good number of uniforms returned and we have recently done a stocktake of all the uniforms we have. Big thanks to Lily Jones and Lily Christensen for doing an amazing job of this. Please can you check at home if you have any outstanding uniforms and return them to the school ASAP.

Athletics

We have had the SCPSSA athletics. We had a team of 8 students attend this event. The students competed well and our best results were as follows:

Nirvana Ruddle 1st 800m 2.44min, Charlotte Walker 1st AWD 70m, 100m, Shot put.

Elin Beertsen, Violet Adams, Nirvana Ruddle, and Addison Campbell were placed 3rd overall in the relay.

We also have 4 students, Ella Waldron, Ethan Hole, Harry Fitzsimons and Sophia Rusbridge attending NZSS athletics in Christchurch on 8-10 Dec. We wish them well and look forward to seeing how they get on.

Aoraki Sports Awards

This was a great evening held at Caroline Bay Hall. Our three students did well with Kristin Schoneveld (Netball) and Kyra Marett (Cycling) winning their categories.

Ella Waldron and Kyra were awarded National Honours.

Kyra was also named a finalist in the top 5 for the Sportswoman award.

Congratulations to these girls, we are very proud of you all.

Summer Quad

This year we took a busload of Year 7 & 8 students to Ellesmere College to compete in Volleyball, Cricket, Basketball, and Touch. Several students were trying these sports for the first time. We had a great day and we had the loudest cheer.

Junior Sports Week

Aoraki Junior Touch

We had two mixed teams in the Junior touch. Our Y9 &10 team played some outstanding touch and narrowly missed out on reaching the final. The team ended up third.

The Y7 & 8 team played a round-robin against 4 other teams and ended up second overall.

Big thanks to Oliver Young, Bryn McKeown, Jackson Weir, and Ryan Chambers who came along to help for the day. They all did an amazing job.

Aoraki Junior Volleyball

We had two girls' teams enter the junior volleyball event. Both teams played some excellent volleyball and were unlucky not to make the final playoffs.

The Junior B team was third overall

A big thank you to Rodney Noval Pangilinan, Wayne Ocon, Chanalee Duncan, and Sarah Johnston who gave up their time to coach and ref at this event.
