MacKenzie Highland Show Easter Monday

Mrs Sarah Foley-Smith —

Once again, the PIA class worked hard and gave up their holiday to run the Country Kids Agri-Skills event for local schools. The day began with plans on how to dig the minivan out of the mud, which fortunately weren’t needed, although the exhibit next door did a good job of trying to flood us out. The PIA students were swamped by a bus load of tourists and found themselves super stars. Much time was wasted as we checked we were looking our best and suitable camera angles found. This was followed by lengthy explanations explaining that the goose decoys were not real, which were followed by offers to purchase them. There was disappointment all-round as Mrs F-S squashed the potential money-spinner and the tourists left without their souvenirs.

The event was a collaboration by GHS Primary Industry, MacKenzie College and MacKenzie Young Farmers.

Teams completed 10 modules, which included a quad tyre change, goose shooting, ear tagging, trailer stropping, lamb feeding and a quiz.

A sizable crowd gathered to support the competitors and a strongly competitive event followed. We had all 3 of the Aorangi regions Grand Final Agrikids teams competing with the surprise final result of Ben, Flynn and Kieran beating them all.

Results:

  • 1st -  Geraldine Cowboys, GHS –Ben O’Kane, Flynn Sugrue and Kieran Chisholm
  • 2nd - Geraldine Hillbillies, GHS - Jessica Furrer, William Wilson and Angus Wallace
  • 3rd -  Clayton Chicks, MacKenzie College
  • 4th -  Tyre marks and hoof prints, Waimate High School
