To whom it may concern,
Hello, my name is Chris Konings and I work for the Sustainable South Canterbury Trust that runs the Eco Centre in Timaru.
The Trust has a project contract with the Ministry for the Environment on enhancing indigenous biodiversity in South Canterbury. As part of this project I want to connect with young people in year groups 11-13 who may be interested in attending a monthly after school activity at the Eco Centre, to learn about and gain practical experience in environmental issues. This would be through various speakers and invitations to help with existing practical programs and is a supervised event.
I know that there are often a small 'environmental' type group at school and these young people are would fit right in this new group. I have consulted with the leaders of Youth Rōpū (ECAN), Forest & Bird, Timaru District Council and they are all supportive of this initiative which will attempt to bring together these individuals and connect them together so they may become more confident, informed, effective and resourced in environmental issues with practically focused activities. This will benefit their schools and the wider community by bringing back credible information, ideas and support for the activities they want to do locally.
I have worked as a Youth-Worker/Director for 15 years in Auckland, Lower Hutt and Mosgiel for ‘not for profit’ organisations. I most recently worked for Waterwatch Trust -South Canterbury delivering a practical educational program on river health (pre covid). I completed a Master’s in Environmental Policy and Management from Lincoln University in 2023.
I work on a mentoring model of leading by example and encouraging participation in all aspects of organising, participating and reviewing of activities.
I would also like to connect with any teachers/staff that would be interested in being involved with this endeavour, from being a school contact for the group, to helping with activities at the Eco Centre.
I have included a poster/ flyer which I would appreciate if you could bring to the students’ awareness and encourage those who are interested to get in contact with me so I can add them to the messenger group the Youth Rōpū girls set up.
Ngā mihi,
Chris Konings
