LEVEL ONE

Course Description

In this course you will develop the reading, writing and oral language skills required to achieve across a range of subjects and for participation in everyday life. You will have the opportunity to explore and debate texts and ideas that challenge and engage. This course also provides a sound base for achieving success in Level 2 English and Level 2 as a whole.

Assessment

10-15 credits including at least one external assessment.

Progression Criteria

To move to an academic English course at Level 2, we will expect students to have 152 credits, including credits from at least one external Achievement Standard.

LEVEL TWO

Course Description

Many vocations, tertiary courses and recreational interests still expect a good grounding in English to be paramount. This course readies students for these experiences beyond secondary school. It is highly recommended that all students take Level 2 English. Many of the standards offered also meet UE literacy requirements of 10 credits (5 credits in reading and 5 credits in writing).

Assessment

10-22 credits including at least one external assessment.

Entry Criteria

At least 12 credits in Level 1 English, including credits from at least one external Achievement Standard.

LEVEL THREE

Course Description

In this course you will gain the written, verbal and visual skills necessary for competent communication that will ready you for future study and vocational pathways. You will co-construct your course and the standards you do with your teacher.

Course of Study

This course includes opportunities to:

produce extended pieces of writing in selected styles

complete independent research

respond critically to literature including film, television, and a variety of written texts respond critically to unfamiliar prose and poetry texts

Assessment

A combination of internal and external credits up to a total of 25 credits.

Entry Criteria

A minimum of 14, including credits from at least one External Achievement Standard from Level 2 English or by the discretion of the HoD of English.
