Sports Updates

Basketball

We had our first Basketball committee meeting on the 3rd of August. A great turnout of parents attended this meeting and moving forward we hope that this group will be able to help and support the growth of Basketball at Geraldine High School.

The Friday night competition has now finished. We had two teams in the finals. Our Senior Girls team and our Junior Boys A team. Both teams ended up runners-up in this competition. The Junior Boys game was especially exciting with the final score 33 - 40 to Roncalli.

On Friday 25 August we held our first Basketball prize giving. This was well attended by both players and their families. Jacob Mulholland was the guest speaker and he had some wise words for our students.

Zespri Aims Games

We have two students who are attending the games this year in Tauranga. Addison and Tyla are both going to be competing in swimming events. We wish them good luck.

Netball

We have had another successful netball season. Congratulations to all players showing their best efforts.

A shout out to the following teams in their grades:

GHS Diamonds 1st place

GHS Junior Development 1st place

GHS Aces 2nd place

GHS Junior A 3rd place

GHS Hearts 3rd place

A special mention to Addison winning a NSC trophy for outstanding junior umpire and to Maddie for also stepping up and umpiring the Year 8 grade - well done girls

Congrats to our GHS Senior A team who finished as the top secondary school team in South Canterbury.

Well done on another great netball season we look forward to celebrating all the achievements on Thursday 7th.

Cycling

Kyra is just going from strength to strength. Here are her results from the Manawatu novice tour.

She won a silver medal in the road race, gold medal in the hill climb and was only 1 second behind the leader after day 1.

Kyra was 5th in the road race for stage 3 and then won another gold in her time trial.

Overall, Kyra won silver by 0.6 of a second.

Kyra had further success at the two day Cuddon Southern Schools Cycling tour when she won the yellow jersey as overall winner of the u17 Girls category.

Kyra’s overall win was set up on the opening day when she won both stages, the individual time trial and the criterium. Each of these events carry National Schools Cycling titles.

This allowed her to go into the final day knowing that as long as she finished in the top three the she couldn't be beaten for the overall title.

Riccarton Exchange

This annual exchange has not happened for a number of years, so it was great we were able to host Riccarton on Tuesday 15 August.

We had our Senior A Netball team, First Eleven Soccer team and our Senior A Boys Basketball and Senior Girls Basketball teams competing.

Geraldine won the Netball 41-29 and the Senior Girls Basketball 27-24.

Riccarton won the soccer 2-0 and the Senior Boys Basketball 99-55.

We were tied on points so it went to a countback with Riccarton taking out the trophy 154 points to 123.

Cross Country

After a break of three years Geraldine High School held its Cross Country on Thursday 3 August. Students and staff were pumped for this event and with a new course layout and the Colour Run, it was all on.

Senior Girls and Boys were the first to run and they completed a course of 5.4km on the local river walk tracks.

Carlos took the title in the Senior Boys with a time of 21.21 min. Ameila won the Senior Girls event in a time of 27.45 min.

Next up was the very excited Minors doing one lap of the course, 3.2km which ended in an exciting head-to-head between Benaiah and Billy. Benaiah won in the end with a time of 12.26 min.

The girl’s race was won by the experienced Grace in a time of 13.36 min.

The Junior age grade was next, and this was won by Anthony (12.34min) and Jennifer (14.19min).

Racing concluded with the Intermediate age grade, who also completed two laps and was won by Ollie (20.16min) and Ella (28.46min).

Once completing the course students had the opportunity to do the colour run which consisted of a slip and slide and hay bale obstacle course with some of our senior students throwing powdered paint at them. This was a popular event amongst all ages.

Event organiser, Miss Opie, commented that it was great to have the event up and running again and students seemed to enjoy their cross country experience.

Badminton

We had two separate days of the Aoraki Champs. The girls were first up and we had two teams entered. It was great to see our students giving badminton a go as many had not played much before.

The boys champs were next and once again we were a bit limited on game experience but the boys were keen and as the course of the day progressed they improved their games and skills.

Table Tennis

We had 3 boys entered in this competition and although not that experienced, they all enjoyed the day and improved their game. It is heartening to see our students trying new sports and challenging themselves in the sporting world.

Rugby

Tackle 10’s held at Temuka saw our team of year 7 & 8 boys competing in this annual tournament. The boys performed well given some tough opposition and freezing cold conditions.

Barker’s Event

Fourteen of our rugby players attended a media event at Barker’s foodstore and eatery on Monday 28 August. This involved our students meeting 3 Canterbury Rugby players, Brodie McAlister, Finlay Brewis and James Mullen. They chatted with the players and judged the platters that they made. Thank you to Barker’s and Canterbury rugby for hosting this event.

Hockey

Wowser! Our Youth Grade team made the finals! What a great game they played against Roncalli and won 4-1. This meant they won the Jubilee cup. A stunning end to our return to Youth grade hockey.
