Wow, Term 1 has been action packed with Sports
Wow, Term 1 has been action packed with Sports events from swimming and athletics, to our Senior Girls Volleyball team attending SISS Satellite Tournament for the first time in about five years. There have been many highlights for the term including our students who have been achieving outstanding results at a local level and a national level. We celebrate and congratulate you all.
Winter Sport is fast approaching and we are sorting teams for Basketball, Netball, Rugby, Soccer and Hockey.
If you want to know more about sports at Geraldine High School check out our Facebook page, Geraldine High School Sport where we post results, notices and photos.
We are always looking out for coaches and managers for our sports teams especially for Basketball. If you think you could spare some time to do this please get in touch with Janet Harding at sports@geraldinehs.school.nz.
We have had our school athletics, Country High Schools, Aoraki and SISS athletics this term.
Some outstanding results from all of these events with a number of records being broken.
It was nice to have Graham Johnston on hand to present the U19 800m Cup to this year's winner Harry Osborne. Harry’s Grandad, Richard Osborne also won the cup.
Our talented Ella Waldron and Ethan Hole attended Nationals in Wellington this year with some fantastic results from both of them. Ella was 3rd in the relay and she won Gold in the 100m hurdles. Ethan’s relay team won Gold.
This year we had a team attend the Aoraki Touch champs. Our team was in the festival grade and played well to end up second. We are in a rebuilding phase with touch and it was great to see the team getting it together and gelling more as the day progressed. Some brilliant runaway tries from Ethan Hole and Harry Fitzsimons.
Our regular Friday night competition has now ended and we had some good results from our teams. Top result was our Senior Boys team ending up 4th in the competition.
We have also had Aoraki Senior Girls and Senior Boys Champs this term. Once again our teams performed well at this event.
This year we took 8 girls to a tournament in Christchurch. It was a busy 3 days of games and our girls punched well above their weight at this tournament. We really were the minnows but our first game against Rolleston College saw us notch up a win. Further games saw us lose but we were only losing by a few points each set. A great deal of learning for the girls and we will be back in 2025 bigger and stronger.
Big thank you to Sarah Johnston who has been coaching the girls and a number of our girls volleyball teams this season.
This year we had a big team enter the primary schools triathlon and our students did so well. The boys team were 5th and the 3 girls teams also ended up 4th and 5th. Our Year 7 girls team of Libby Cooper, Emma Weaver and Olive McCullough needs a special mention as they performed very well considering they were up against Year 8’s.
We now have our Year 7 & 8 teams up and running in the regular Monday night competition. Our teams are getting great results.
We have held trials for the Y9-13 boys and girls and teams are being sorted. We have 4 more teams than last year which is great.
Competition for this age group begins in Term 2.
We hosted a have-a-go hockey session at lunchtime with folks from Geraldine Hockey Club running a skills session.
Numbers are looking good this year and we should have students in the Y7 & 8 comp and the Youth grade comp again.
This was held in Oamaru again and we had two teams enter this year. Congratulations to our teams who won the Aoraki event in the Intermediate and Junior grades. In the SISS event they were 4th.
We have had Geraldine Rugby club JAB development officer, Damien Bromwich come along and host a couple of have-a-go skills sessions at school this term. We are hoping to attract more players to the sport as numbers are a bit light at this stage. Thanks to Damien and his team for running some fun sessions.
We also like to celebrate staff sporting achievements and this term we had two staff members place in the local croquet competition. Well done Anna and Edwina on coming third.
Lance Brodina competed in the Enduro and Downhill events at the SISS Mountain Biking at Coronet Peak. Lance was competing in the U14 age group and in both events he finished in the top third. In the downhill he was 23rd and in the Enduro he was 16th.
Grace Worner had a great Easter competing in the Speed Skating Oceania Championships which were held in Timaru this year. She received the award for the top overall Cadet Girl having gained 4 gold, 1 silver and 2 bronze medals.
The kiwis also took back the plaque from the Aussie’s with an impressive medal haul!!
