Sustainability Group

Jess CradockOctober 29, 2023

The Sustainability Group was created at the start of this year with the purpose of making the school more environmentally sustainable.

Throughout the year the group has facilitated a beach, a park clean up and reinstated recycling back into the school. In term three we went to Browns Beach (near Temuka) for an afternoon to do a clean up and by the end of the afternoon we successfully collected 7 sacks of rubbish.

In term 4 we had a clean up week which was a great time for the group to make people more aware of what rubbish goes in which bin as well as being a great success to see our school environment cleaned up. During this week we also went to Kennedy Park at lunchtime to tidy this area as well. Once again it was a worthwhile but disappointing experience due to the amount of rubbish left in the area.

Our main focus this year was to reintroduce recycling to our school. It has been a long-term effort by our group, and we have even introduced new roles, such as recycling monitors. We are happy to say that recycling has been running smoothly since the beginning of the fourth term and has seamlessly become a part of our daily morning routine at school.
