My name is Bella Keeley and I am a member of the Student Science Committee for 2019. This is a new committee and is focused on making Science fun for all students in and out of class. There are 10 in the committee ranging from Year 7 to 12 and Ms Quinn is there to guide us when we need it.
We have a lot of ideas but so far this year we have started planning a couple of projects, focusing on Science Fair and Science Badges.
School Science Fair
On Wednesday 14th August we are going to hold a Science Fair at school for all students Years 7 to 13. We would love to see as many students as possible enter in the GHS Science Fair. There will be placings and some small prizes given out. The highest placings will be taken through to the Sanford Science and Technology Fair in Timaru. Senior Science students will be grading the GHS Science Fair, alongside Science teachers. Students will be given feedback and feedforward if they are chosen to go through to Timaru.
School Science Display
As everyone has done so much amazing work this half of the year we have decided to display some work at school. Students can display any of their work, including their Science Fair, Science Badge and Science Snack work. There will be more details closer to the time.
Science Badges is a programme available for all Year 7 to 10 students throughout New Zealand. Previously it has only been open for Year 7 and 8's at GHS but it is now open for Year 7 to 10's! The way it works is you chose a badge you want to do and then compete the activities given. Once you have completed them you hand them in to be marked. Each badge costs $6 but you can still do it and gain a certificate if you don't want the badge. Leah Boase and I are working our way around all classes to tell everyone about it.
So get involved everyone! There is something for everyone.
