On Friday 1st June the staff visited a number of businesses in the South Canterbury area. One of our strategic goals states that “All students are supported to identify a pathway of learning that is relevant to them and focused on their future success.” This day allowed us to go to businesses in a number of different industries to look at the jobs that they have available and hear about the skills that they require from our school leavers. Staff visited The Timaru District Council, Thompsons Engineering, Dan Cosgrove Ltd, Sandford Ltd, The Timaru Container Terminal and Barkers. One staff member stated that “Visiting them onsite is very powerful as you can see the actual vocations in action.” A number of staff have now made further contact with businesses so that they can take groups of students back to visit them. It has also given staff ideas of people to approach to come in to school to speak to particular groups.
The message that was consistent from the businesses was that even if you start at the bottom of the business, if you are a hard worker and prepared to learn, they will invest the time in you to help you move through to a higher position. It was very interesting to see the huge range of positions that are available in these companies. We were fortunate to be supported by Ginny Vincent from Aoraki Development who liaised with all of the businesses for us and helped make this a very worthwhile experience for the staff.
