Sexuality Education at GHS

Year 7 & 8

As part of our Year 7-8 Health programme for Term 3, we wish to advise we will be working with students on positive relationships and puberty. The learning outcomes for this unit will enable the students to work towards the achievement objectives of Health and Physical Education in the New Zealand Curriculum. This unit of work will provide students with the knowledge, understandings and skills to develop positive attitudes towards the changes that they will experience during puberty.

Through the key concepts of this unit, students will learn about:

  • the physical, mental and emotional, social, and spiritual growth and development that occurs and the new needs that arise during puberty;
  • strategies to manage the changes they will experience;
  • factors that influence their choices during puberty (including their families, their peers, the media, and religious and cultural beliefs);
  • their own feelings and their rights and responsibilities;
  • how to identify instances of discrimination and take positive action in such cases.

The programme is made up as follows:

  • Characteristics of pubertal change
  • Strategies to manage pubertal change
  • Self worth
  • Different attitudes, values, beliefs and behaviours
  • Choices and consequences
  • Resource agencies and health services
  • Strategies to deal with harassment and abuse
  •  Assertiveness skills
  • Lifestyle factors and media influences
  • Interpersonal skills to enhance relationships
  • Explore issues relating to pressure
  • How relationships change over time and managing that change
  • Develop strategies to support the rights and feelings of self and others
  • Functions of the sexual and reproductive parts of the body – Year 8
  • Sexual feelings - Year 8.

One session will be run by the Public Health Nurse, Claire Neilson.

Year 9 and 10

In Term 3, we will start the sexuality education component of the Year 9 & 10 Health programmes. The learning outcomes for this unit of work will enable students to work towards the achievement objectives of Health and Physical Education in the New Zealand Curriculum. The Public Health Nurse will be in to teach two of the sessions.

Year 9 lesson tropics will include:

  • Relationships/Friendships
  • Attitudes and Values
  • Decision Making
  • Changes at Puberty Revision
  • Positive Sexuality
  • Conception
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Year 10 lesson topics will include:

  • Relationships/Friendships
  • Attitudes and Values
  • Sex and Sexuality
  • Positive Sexuality
  • Conception
  • Contraception
  • Risky Behaviour
  • Sexually Transmitted Infections.

Two sessions will be run by the Public Health Nurse, Claire Neilson.
