Last Sunday we had a mixed team of year 11-13s play in the Aoraki Touch tournament at Timaru. Geraldine was up against some touch competition but played very well taking home a win against Mackenzie to finish the day. Well done to the team for giving this event a go, especially our 3 girls that played the whole day with no subs!
Country High Athletics
Following on from our school athletics we took a total of 45 students to Country High athletics, hosted by Waimate. Geraldine High School excels in this event each year with the dominating amount of students we take along to participate in events. It was a very warm day and another exceptional day for our athletes. The students' age grades range from Year 7-13. All of our students placed in at least the top 3 of each individual event and our replay teams all placed 1st bar one 2nd place. Overall this was a great day out and we enjoyed watching our students compete against other country schools. This group showed so much support and unity towards each other, the school spirit towards the younger and older students was outstanding on the sideline. We would like to give a big well done and acknowledge our young U12.5s. This was some of our Year 7 & 8 students' first time attending CHS.students who performed extremely well with their events on this day.
Ruby Mahuika and Georaeah Edmonds-Cooper
Ruby placed 1st in 400m and 800m. She was also a member of the U12.5 relay team who placed 1st.
Georaeah placed 1st in discus and shotput. Georaeah was also a member of the U12.5 winning relay.
Oli McKeown, Rhys Baker and GP van Heerden
Oli placed 1st in 400m, 800m and High Jump. Oli was also in the winning relay for U12.5 Boys.
Rhys Baker placed 1st in 100m and was in our boys relay team.
GP placed first in Shotput and Discus.
A massive congratulations to Ruby Mahuika, Ethan Hole and Rhys Baker who have made the Canterbury Athletics Teams. Ruby will be heading to Dunedin for the 995 team this weekend and Ethan Hole and Rhys Baker have made the IP team and will go to Palmerston North over Easter to compete.
SCPSSA Year 7 & 8 Triathlon
On Friday the 12th of March, six of our Year 7 & 8 students participated in the South Canterbury Primary School Triathlon held at Ashbury Park in Timaru. Racers had to swim 50m, run 2km and bike 4.5km. We had some awesome results from our girls team (Emma Campbell, Hayley Pigeon and Hannah Boorer-Lilley) who placed first overall in their grade. We also had Year 8 student Rhys Baker place first overall in his age grade - this is such an awesome achievement for our young students. Well done guys!
After an outstanding performance at Country Highs our athletics students moved onto the Aoraki Event in Timaru. There were a total of 17 schools from around the Aoraki region that participate in this event. Geraldine High School took along 24 students to compete in a range of track and field events. It was a very successful day from our participants with a number of athletes being place getters. We acknowledge all participants that did an amazing effort, who placed at this event and displayed the next level competing effort in representing Geraldine High School. We would like to make a special mention to recognise the following students for their own personal success on this day.
Ella Waldron broke the GHS record that stood by Emma Becroft in 2019 (GHS Student) for U14G Long Jump, Ella placed 1st in her grade at Aorakis. The GHS record stood at 4.77m and Ella jumped 5.02m. Ella also placed 1st in her 80m hurdles. Ella has been selected to attend SISS Athletics for hurdles and Long jump. At the weekend Ella also competed in the Canterbury Champs. She placed 1st in her 80m hurdles and 2nd in Long jump. Ella has just been selected for the Canterbury Interprovincial Team which will travel and compete in Palmerston North over Easter.

The location will remain a secret until the registration the evening prior, but is close to Geraldine and involves hill country, open views, native bush and stunning views. There is both a 3 hour option (great introduction to adventure racing and suitable for families) and a more challenging 6 hour option. The entry fees are very reasonable and will be a lot of fun!
