Assembly 4 - 21st March 2017
Tena Koutou te kura Taurua o Raukapuka whanau
Today’s and our last assembly have been focussed on giving direction towards your learning - last assembly it was about your academic focus and today on the choices you make towards your future beyond school.
At the last assembly, I spoke about Freya, Matthew and Emma and how amazing they are because they never give up, they have committed themselves to achieving their very best regardless of what others think of them.
Today I am going to speak about being yourself, and with every challenge, finding the best of that situation so that you can be an extraordinary individual.
Some of you know that I am an insulin dependent Diabetic and have been since I was 10 years old - which means I have had to manage my food intake, exercise and injections, which are 4 times a day.
Why? Because a part in my body doesn’t work and so I have to do this myself. If I don’t then I can go into a coma and possibly die or lose limbs if I don’t maintain a good level of control.
So, I decided very early on that I would not make that an excuse to stop doing things and instead would really push myself because of this. So I was the first Insulin dependent diabetic to go on Outward Bound - a 21 day course where you are pushed to your limit both physically and mentally in the outdoor environment; I was able to compete in ski racing overseas and experienced many adventures in remote parts of our country.
You wouldn’t know that I had Diabetes looking at me but for others it is more obvious but the challenges remain the same - to make the best of these challenges and ensure that this does not become your barrier to success.
Nick Vujicic, is an Australian who was born without limbs. He graduated from Griffith University at the age of 21 with a Bachelor of Commerce degree, with a double major in accountancy and financial planning. Nick has more obvious challenges that you will see and hear about. I hope that seeing this video will make you think more about your challenges and how your attitude is to these challenges as these will define who you are.
Nick is a motivational speaker who talks around the world about his challenges and successes in his life so far.
So today and the rest of this year - I want you to meet every challenge with attitude - the attitude of finding the best in every situation you face so that you can be an extraordinary individual.
