Aoraki Maths Competition 2016
On Wednesday 10th and Thursday 11th August 28 students from Years 7 through to 10 represented Geraldine High School in the annual Aoraki Maths Competition. This is a teams’ competition (teams of 4) where the teams try to successfully answer as many of the twenty questions on offer in the half hour available with the winning team being the first to finish. They compete in year levels with up to 32 teams from Ashburton to Oamaru competing at each year level. Speed and accuracy are vital components to success and often the winning teams will have one very quick mathematician who can win the event for you.
Unfortunately, even though all of our teams gave it their all, they did not manage to place in any level as this year the bigger schools dominated, not surprisingly.
The results for Geraldine were:
Year 7 finished 9th and 13th out of 31 teams
Year 8 both teams finished 11th equal out of 32.
Year 9 finished 7th out of 26.
Year 10 finished 9th and 18th.
The students involved were:
Year 7: Saskia Finlayson-Hood, Jessica Furrer, Arthur Hayhoe, Brianna Howell, Amelia McKeown, Katie Moginie, Thomas Stone and Flynn Sugrue.
Year 8: Graeme Campbell, Sam Danford, Conor Foley-Smith, Marcus Furrer, Robert Furrer, Ryan Leith, Harlan Rae and Jack Barrie.
Year 9: Lydia Burnett, Sam Guerin, Jamie Roberts and Ben Williams.
Year 10: Koan Brown, Ethan Hornsby, William Kellahan, Alesha Martin, Connie McFarlane, Hannah Wilson, Liam Wilson and Lydia Wilson.
I am sure all the students involved enjoyed the event and, if available, would be keen to return next year. Many thanks to all parents, staff and students involved with the organisation, transport and participation as without you these events do not happen.
