From the Principal
It was a privilege to be involved in our farewell to the six long serving staff last Friday evening where past colleagues, Principals, friends and family joined our staff and BOT for a wonderful event. Our six staff - Mr Simon Keeley, Mrs Doreen Callow, Mr Mark Romans, Mr Richard Ramsay, Mr Peter McCaskill and Mrs Shirley Lindroos were spoken about by colleagues and it was fascinating to hear about their past history and the contributions they have made. It will be a sad occasion as we finish school this year as these staff complete their time at Geraldine High School but we do wish them well in what lies for them beyond the school gates.
New Staff Induction
Following on from our long serving staff leaving, we had two days last week where we had our new staff for 2018 have time getting familiar with our school. They had time with the departments they will be involved in along with a chance to meet with their mentor. To keep our community up to date with all of these changes, I have listed the new staff below:
Year 7 and 8 Homeroom - Miss Georgia Fogerty and Miss Sarah Hamilton
Science - Ms Katie Martin [Agriculture] and Miss Paige Richmond [Chemistry] along with Ms Adele Quinn as our new HOD of Science.
Mathematics - Ms Roxanne Pitchford [HOD of Maths]
Music - Mr Steven McNulty
Technology - Mr Stephen Ludwig
Languages - Mr Jarrod Wallace
We continue to have a few more positions and roles to fill over the coming weeks. My thanks to all the staff involved in working with these new staff over the two days and to Ms Cate Knowles and Mr Stuart Wilcox for their organising and assisting throughout this time.
Year 10 Challenge
Last week and this week have been very busy for our Year 10’s and the staff involved in the Year 10 Challenge Programme. Last week, our students were involved for a day doing service in our community which is such a lovely connection to our wider community where wood was stacked, cars cleaned and a myriad of other work activities carried out.
This week they have had the final Lake Hood Challenge where they compete against the other classes on a range of water based activities. The final part of this programme is the Year 10 Presentation Evening which is on Friday 24th November at the Geraldine Primary School Hall and is always a pleasure to attend to see the hard work put in throughout the year being recognised with Gold or Silver awards. As with every one of our school events outside the classroom, it is the enthusiasm and effort of staff that make these a reality. My thanks to the Year 10 Challenge committee of Mrs Shirley Lindroos, Mrs Yvonne Smith, Mr Hayden Titchener, Mrs Andy Morrison and Mr Haden Powell for making this year a successful one for our Year 10 students.
We have recently had three significant successes for students of our school which I would like to share.
Year 13 Student Matthew Hornsby - Matthew was our DUX at our recent Senior Prizegiving and has received the UC Electric Power Engineering Centre Scholarship valued up to $15,000 towards his degree.
Year 10 Girls Volleyball - we recently had 2 Junior Girls Volleyball teams at the Aoraki Championships in Timaru. Our Junior B Team placed 6th and our Junior A team went through pool play unbeaten and won against Ashburton A in the Final. This is the first time we have won the Aoraki Junior Volleyball Championship and congratulations to Yuane Haasbroek (C), Bailey Hillegers, Hannah Davies-Parnham, Charlotte Stack, Liana Karika, Laura Murphy and Ellarose Bennett in the A team.
Aoraki Sports Awards - these were held a few weeks ago and it is wonderful to see the students who are committed to their chosen sport being recognised regionally. Below are those who gained awards from our school and our thanks to Mrs Kim Andrews and her dedication to keep elevating the opportunities in sport for all our students.
Stephen Harding was a finalist for Cross Country and Won the Orienteering award and received NZ Honours for Orienteering.
Kate Brown won the Kart Racing, Kayaking and MTB awards and also received NZ Honours for Kart Racing and Multisport.
James Burnett won the Male Pool award and received NZ Honours for Pool.
Lydia Burnett won the Female Pool Award and also received NZ Honours for Pool.
Staff member, Mr Kieran Blogg, was a finalist for Contribution to School Sport for all the hard work he puts into Rugby and Touch here at school.
As with our Sunday Geraldine Ski Academy, we also have Mr Stuart Wilcox offering the opportunity for students at both Primary and High School to learn about triathlons and train for these on a weekly basis. We have a large group of students who come to this training every Thursday after school to swim, bike and run around Geraldine. Having Year 13 student Kate Brown also available and assisting has provided these students the chance to see how far you can go in this sport.
Tena koutou, Tena koutou, tena tartoe katoa.
Greetings, Greetings, Greetings to us all
