Rewi Alley Writing Competition
Year 13 History student James Burnett recently entered the Rewi Alley History Essay Competition, and consequently won the principal prize of cash and Rewi Alley's autobiography.
Rewi Alley was raised and educated in Canterbury, fought in the First World War in France, farmed in Taranaki in the 1920's and spent 60 years in China where he is honoured as one of five most significant foreigners. This year, 2017, marks Rewi Alley’s 120th birthday.
To help keep his memory alive and to ensure young people learn about his life and achievements, the Rewi Alley anniversary coordinating committee in conjunction with the New Zealand China Friendship Society ran this competition for all schools in Canterbury, and are holding anniversary events in Christchurch. As James won the top prize, he has been invited to join the New Zealand China Friendship Society at the opening of a photo exhibition of Rewi Alley at the Christchurch Arts Centre on the 27th where he will be awarded his prize.
