Our Club All Blacks

GI Rugby —

We have had several Club All Blacks...including TWO current AB's...

We have had five Club players selected as All Blacks while playing in Green and Gold for GI...

Lyn Jaffray

John Lyndon Jaffray

All Black # 711

Position: First five-eighth, Second five-eighth

1972-1979, 7 Caps, 4 points (1t)

Our first club All Black. A first or second five-eighth , Lyn represented Otago and South Canterbury at a provincial level, and was a member of the All Blacks between 1972 and 1979. He played 23 matches for the All Blacks including seven internationals

Merv Jaffray

Mervyn William Rutherford Jaffray

All Black #767

Position: Flanker & Number 8

1976

Merv played four matches for the All Blacks but no full internationals.

Greg Cooper

Gregory John Luke Cooper

All Black #869

Position: Fullback

1986, 1992, 7 Caps, 63 points

One of this countries highest performing domestic players, "Coops" had silky skills.

"Coops" represented Hawke's Bay, Otago and Auckland at a provincial level and the Blues in Super Rugby. He was a member of the New Zealand national side, the All Blacks, in 1986 and 1992, and played seven matches, all of them tests.

It is true that 'Coops' had already been selected an All Black in '86 before joining GI, but he made his comeback in '92 whilst being a member of our club.

Ben Smith

Benjamin Robert Smith

All Black #1100

Position: Fullback, Wing, Outside Centre

2009-Present, Caps 76, 165 Points (as of 8th February 2019)

Need we say more....superlatives do this player no justice. A late bloomer "Bender" has developed into one of the worlds best ever fullbacks. Ben plays for Otago, Highlanders and the All Blacks.  Interestingly, Ben is stranded on 49 Caps for Green Island....wouldn't it be awesome to see him bring up his 50th game at some point in the future!

Jackson Hemopo

All Black #1173

Position: Lock, Flanker

2018-Present, Caps 3  (as of 8th February 2019)

...and we also have connections with other All Blacks. The following players played for Green Island, before moving on to play for other clubs when they were selected for the national side...

Brian McKechnie

Brian John McKechnie

All Black #778

Position: First five-eighth, fullback

1977-1981, 26 Caps, 144 points (2t, 22c, 28p, 4dg)

Stu Forster

Stuart Thomas Forster

All Black #934

Position: Halfback

1993-1995, 6 Caps

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Stu_Forster

...and let's not forget 'Big Gordy Mac' who was already an All Black before coming to play for Green Island...

Gordon MacPhereson

All Black #873

Position: Lock

1986, 1 Cap

All Black Nick Evans (All Black # 1039) was partnered with our club by the ORFU, but never pulled on the Green and Gold during his time in Dunedin - so it would be incorrect to call him a Club All Black. His loss!   https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nick_Evans_(rugby_union)
