GEIS GOES TO BOOKBATTLE

Jacob Prisk —

A Day to Remember

It was Friday 14 June, and the rain was pouring. Umbrellas unfurled, we raced to the safety of cars, the rain streaming like arrows towards us. After what seemed like hours of music, laughter, and polite conversation, we were freed!

Arriving at Te Manawa—the library that would host Book Battle—we wandered inside. Eyes like plates in our heads, we marvelled at the 3 floors of sheer wonder: books galore! Stair after stair passed below our feet as we began the momentous climb to the top. When would it end? Eventually having been seated in 2 groups—Yasmin, Yehya, Oscar and William in “GEIS A”, Emily, Taika, Scarlett and I in “GEIS B”, and Ayan in the wings as a moral cheerleader—we settled down for the 2 hours it would take for the Book Battle to come to a close.

“GEIS A” team came 3rd overall, and “GEIS B” team came a close 9th. However, GEIS A came 3rd only after battling 3 other teams in a Sudden Death round. Accounting for the fact that there were almost 30 teams there and that this was GEIS’ first time competing in Book Battle, Glen Eden was exemplary!

Overall, Book Battle was a prodigious experience, but without the help of Madame, and our 2 fantastic parent helpers, we wouldn’t be anywhere near where we are now.
