Karekare and Te Henga trips to the Auckland Museum

Jacob Prisk —

This term we are inquiring into and learning about " How do nations pay tribute to the past?" Karekare and Te Henga visited the Auckland Museum to focus on World War 1. Below is a recount by Thavanesh Thevar from Room 4.

 Museum Trip

This term, our school’s inquiry is about how nations pay tribute to the past. To dive deeper on May 10th we took an expedition to the museum to learn more about WW1 and how we remember what our soldiers experienced. We had a lecture on WW1 called “Witness to History”, and found about priceless artefacts and their owners in the “Scars In The Heart” section. This was a great educational experience for the three classes, and a great opportunity to find out about those who predeceased us fighting in the war.

The “Witness To History” lecture was a great learning experience. Interestingly, the gallery had an amazing timeline winding around the walls, which explained how WW1 started, and the main parts of this historic event. Aaron, one of the facilitators, did a great job explaining the gallery. While we were there, we went through a trench, simulating the conditions. As well, we were able to handle actual artefacts from WW1. Overall, the lecture provided us with a lot of knowledge about those who fought in the past, and how they would’ve felt in these times.

Our trip also consisted of a booklet that we worked through. It starred the “Scars In The Heart” section. We got to see amazing items of war and find more out about the owners’ stories and experiences.

Afterwards, we had the opportunity to explore the museum further and learn about prehistoric times, Pasifika treasures, relics of war and other priceless artifacts that all had an amazing story awaiting to be discovered.

The museum is an amazing place to explore and learn, and it was an amazing trip to remember!
