Student council update

Jude Hancock —

By student leaders Aralyn Rm15 and Cooper Rm27

Throughout the second half of Term 2, our Student Council has been very busy. Fortnightly, we all meet up to discuss our Class Climate Committee meetings run by the class councillors. Each classroom shares positive moments and negatives with the solutions they used to solve the situation. Lots of chatter amongst the students about how their classrooms have been running. Not only have we been discussing these meetings, but the Class Councilors have also been trying on number one uniforms for our open days and open nights in weeks 2 and 4 next term. Our year 7s from the Student Council also had the wonderful opportunity to go and talk in front of the year 6s at their own primary school about GEIS and how it has been for them.

In week 8, our Gladiators Sports Camp team went down to Matamata to compete in a tournament involving multiple different sports for an entire week. Early mornings and lunchtimes, you’d see them working hard and preparing themselves physically and mentally for the tough competition. Tuesday-Thursdays they would be putting in lots of effort during special fitness sessions. During their time away, they worked together and came third out of all the teams there! An incredible outcome for our athletes.

The student leaders of GEIS attended the young leaders day, down in Manukau at the Due Drop Event Centre in week 6. It was a bunch of fun as we got to listen to well-known motivational speakers such as Brooke Neal and William Pike. They shared their stories and the rough times they had to go through to get to where they are today. The day was filled with smiles and laughter. A memorable day for our Student Leaders.

Matariki in week nine was amazing! We had a wonderful Hautapu and a lot of respect and recognition of what Matariki means to GEIS happened that morning. There was a major amount of sharing kai like Frothy Hot Chocolates and warm bacon butties. Although it started at 6:15 it was totally worth the early wake up. It was awesome. Not only did we have our ceremony, but during the week each class created a feather cloak and had multiple matariki tasks to work on. We had a matariki assembly Monday week 10 that showcased what we learnt and had wonderful performances from our Kapa Haka and choir.

Term 2 was such a fun-filled term for the students here at GEIS. Lots of opportunities here and lots more coming. We can’t wait to see what Term 3 brings for us as a Kura.
