GEIS Writing Champion!
Gertrude Van Niekerk wins Barfoot and Thompson Writers Challenge with her story titled "Ripples of a Revolution"
‘I alone cannot change the world, but I can cast a stone across the waters to create many ripples.’ Although I know little about her fascinating thoughts and ideas, this wise quote spoken by Mother Theresa inspired what I attempted to label as my own words of wisdom – ‘Ripples of Revolution.
Though I still can’t bear to read over it without a cringed expression flooding over my cheeks, essentially, earlier in the year, I submitted the five hundred words to a young authors challenge sponsored by the esteemed real estate company; Barfoot and Thompson. Little did I expect to win; my boredom tends to be short-lived when I enter the little surveys at the ends of Kmart receipts – so the email I was sent was met with surprise as somebody who has never given them second thoughts. Although the potion sweetened when I realised I’d won the school $1000 dollars, and another thousand for the gorgeous library. Moreover, $500 for myself and $250 worth of books – I think my “To Be Read” would appreciate those words! Furthermore, considering my spectacular class, Room 20, recently acquired the title of winning Moneytime 2023, I think it’s beyond infinite appropriateness to action my newfound financial literacy knowledge – courtesy of the school. And so, thank you very much to everything GEIS has done for me as I leave soon with happiness etched onto those cringed cheeks.
