Piha Mangere Mountain Trip

admin GEIS —

As part of the Term 2 Inquiry topic ‘How can we protect our taonga?’, Piha Mini School students went on a school trip to Mangere Mountain (Te Pane o Mataoho).

Students took part in guided walks up the mountain and participated in a range of educator workshops from Traditional Tools (Tāonga Taputapu), to Māori Medicine (Rongoā Māori) and Stick Games (Tītī Tōrea).

Kayla Southey reports: “It was interesting to learn about the history of Mangere Mountain and the significance of the different parts of the mountain. We were lucky that the morning fog cleared away just as we reached the top so we got to enjoy the spectacular view. I enjoyed the interactive activities using traditional tools and methods and thought it was cool to learn more about Māori taonga.”
