Never underestimate a bunch of netball girls!

Vaimoana Vaai —

The last time these girls played basketball together was at sports camp, so to get the win at Waitakere zone felt so good.

We pulled together our basketball sports camp teams to represent our school at the Waitakere zone tournament.  The competition was tough with our boys' team missing out on a finals spot with their narrow loss to Henderson Intermediate. The boys playoff for 3rd and 4th went down to the wire and with 10 seconds left on the clock the scores were locked up at 12 all.  A late substitution was made and, with 5 seconds to go, Kingston intercepted a pass for a brilliant steal to make a dashing run down the court to finish a beautiful lay up for Glen Eden to win the game 14-12.

Our girls team went through the day unbeaten and with only one substitution for the day, fitness, grit and determination really pulled them through.  Playing through the fundamentals of basketball by moving the ball swiftly through the court you could say it was a cross between netball and basketball the way these girls played.

Winning the Waitakere competition means they now qualify for the Auckland champs on Thursday 29th October at EventFinda stadium.

Special thanks to coach Moanekah Va'ai for taking both teams at the zone day, she trained them for Sports Camp so it was good to see they hadn't forgotten these skills taught.
