GEIS Student named in the U13 NZ Storm Girls Basketball team travelling to Las Vegas!
Athena Tagaloa Room 17- What a story !
21 July 2023 the first day of Sports Camp 2023 Warriors (Athena had never played basketball before this but upon the encouragement of Ms Va'ai - Athena trialled for basketball and has since fallen in love with the sport)
21 July 2024 - Athena flys to America for the opportunity of a life time - to play in the HiVis Tournament against teams as far afield as Hawaii, Canada, Houston, Oregon & Oklahoma to name a few in a week long Tournament all over Las Vegas. To be on this trip one had to be recommended by their coach - and we are thankful for her coaches who have helped her to learn the game.
1 year of learning the game , putting in the extra work after school at trainings , on her own and Athena has achieved so much already for someone who has only been playing for less than a year (to date)
This year:
U12 Flaxhill Girls Champs
Waitakere West Auckland Basketball U16 Reserves who took out Supercity 2nd Div (as an 11 year old)
Coast Girls U14 Girls Team that took out Div2 at the Mel Young Classic Tournament in Tauranga (at 11yo the youngest on her team)
Named in the U13 NZ Storm Girls team travelling to Vegas
Named in the Waitakere West Auckland Basketball U14 Premier Girls Team (season to start upon arriving back from Vegas)
Athena has officially also been selected for the Koru Tour heading to Australia in January 2025 for the U14 girls team.
So many doors have opened up for her since basketball and it all started with GEIS sports camp trials.
We are super grateful for Ms Va'ai who continues to encourage and push Athena to keep striving.
We are grateful for her amazing school (GEIS) with whom we have found a place for Athena to absolutely thrive.
Athena heads to Vegas representing her family, her culture and most definitely HER SCHOOL !
