St Peter's Cambridge Rugby Festival

Vaimoana Vaai —

The quality of rugby this week was outstanding, probably the best rugby games we have seen for this age group in a long time!

Thank you Carl Perry (past GEIS Student and current director of rugby at St Peter's Cambridge) for asking Glen Eden Intermediate last year if we were keen to be part of a new rugby tournament hosted by St Peter’s Cambridge for the preparatory schools.  Russel Lennox, brilliant organisation!

A MASSIVE THANK YOU to Peter Brown and Mark Hooper for the AMAZING coaching with our boys.

Our team was made up of 4 Union, 15 league boys and 1 musician who’s only started playing rugby at Glen Eden.

Our coaches only had 8 weeks - 2 sessions a week, to teach all the fundamentals, rules, patterns and basics of the rugby Union game which was no easy task, especially with the majority of our boys being league players. These two men have to be the best junior coaches our kids will ever have in the game of rugby Union (both from Ponsonby Rugby).

The prep schools live and breathe Rugby Union.  They play regularly against each other and they play together as a team for club rugby on a Saturday. Glen Eden definitely stood up to the challenge and battled in every game.

Without Pete and Hoops coaching our boys there was no way we would have been ready for this competition so THANK YOU from all of us.

Thank you Dan Willemsen for assisting our coaches before and during this tournament at every training, as well as having to teach your class.  We thoroughly enjoyed our 4 days away with the team.

To our sports camp boys who backed up after a whole week away, you had to dig deep in your darkest times when the body was screaming for a rest, but you all pushed through it.

Every team we played were in awe of the physicality of our team and every team commented on our backline saying it was the best in the competition. What an awesome compliment for our team to hear this!

This was an amazing experience for our boys to be in this environment of athletes and coaching staff.

The quality of rugby this week was outstanding, probably the best rugby games we have seen in this age group in a long time (since Roller Mills was disbanded).  We will definitely be back!!
