SPEC NEWS

Tracy Taylor —

It has been another busy term in the Spec Department with many projects completed.

In FOOD TECH, Year 8 students were happy to do their bit to support those competing at AIMS Games.

Each class had fun cooking a batch of Nacho Mince, providing a meal for students and staff at the games.

Some students got to make and eat the meal. They proudly told other competitors they had made it, when it tasted delicious!

Food Technology was very enjoyable, we made affordable meals and learnt ways to reduce food waste. I  found it especially fun when we got to choose our own meals to create and take a look at everything else that was made. I also learnt to make my food look presentable and what each type of food gives you.

Angie McElroy Yr 8.

I really enjoyed Food Spec. It was lots of fun and I loved learning about all the different food types and why we need them. I enjoyed planning and creating a delicious beef lasagna with Alayna and I will use my new learned food skills later in life.

Daphne Slater Yr 8.

In Food Tech I learnt how to cook and bake different foods with very different tastes. I enjoyed making pizza and I also liked kneading the dough and following instructions.

Riaan Katvi Yr 7.

I enjoyed eating the food after cooking it. I learnt how to cook foods with healthier ingredients than you usually would, to encourage students to eat more vegetables.

Otia Te Ariki Yr7.

In HARD MATERIALS Andy Boyd is continuing to create projects using the Laser Cutter. Year 7s have been making trophies whilst the Year 8s have been adapting Board Games. Also, they have created jigsaws, tealight lanterns and taonga.

In VISUAL ART, we have been completing a range of artworks which have included Papièr Machè animals, Monstera paintings, Still life paintings and Marimekko inspired artworks. Students have particularly enjoyed using Posca Paint Pens to enhance their designs.

We will also be entering work into the Auckland Middle Schools' Art Association Exhibition at Silo6 from November 3rd to 10th.

Some thoughts from students in DESIGN TECHNOLOGY...

Design made me use the creative side of my brain. Willoughby

Design was really relaxing because it let me explore my imagination through drawing/computer design. I enjoyed designing different houses and then building them. I also enjoyed going outside and taking photos of nature and turning them into stained glass windows. I really enjoyed everything. Jack

I learnt how to notetake by drawing and how to make a story with hexagons and  then make them ourselves. I enjoyed building a house in Minecraft. Connor

I learnt how to investigate better and understand different areas of learning. I enjoyed linking the hexagons and drawing.  Flynn

I have learned about strange and cool buildings and turning them into Minecraft. It was fun to  discuss with friends. I enjoyed creating things in Minecraft with my friends working together. Levi

I learnt how to think with creativity when designing. Tyler

I have learned many different ways to look at things and see things  creatively. I enjoyed creating things in Minecraft with my friends. Luca

DRAMATIC ARTS and SOUND ARTS have been to see Chicago at Avondale College. The Rock Band has performed at Titirangi Primary School and both Spec Teachers are gearing up for GEIS X-Factor in Term 4.
