Student Leaders 2020

Michelle Abbasi —

It is with great pleasure that we introduce our student leaders for 2020. Pictured from left to right: Jarom Rowell, Cameron Moffat, Gezreyal Maiu'u, Sasha Tobin, Annabelle Gasparich, Nabiha Eliyas and Josiah Va'ai Tupai.

These students went through a robust selection process at the end of 2019. We are sure they will have a successful tenure in their roles. Lets learn a bit about them all!

Cameron Moffat Head Boy:  I am really privileged to be the head boy at GEIS for 2020. I am in Room 20 and a proud Te Henga student.

I enjoyed 2019 a lot but I am really looking forward to all the opportunities that will come in 2020. My focus for GEIS in 2020 is for students to be more involved around the school. With so many great opportunities there is something for everyone. Whether it’s a sport, activity or club doesn’t matter, what matters is people learning new things. I myself have had many times to learn new things this year such as philosophy, cactus, student council the list goes on. The only thing I am not looking forward to this year is leaving.

This school has given me so many things that I could never get from anywhere else. New skills, new friends, new opportunities. Together we can make 2020 awesome.

Annabelle Gasparich Head Girl:  I am really honoured to have this role and intend to put all my efforts into making our school great in 2020.

I got involved in a lot of activities last year and really encourage you to do the same we've got only two years at Intermediate school and you've got to make the most of it. Highlights of last year for me was representing GEIS at the NZ AIMS sporting competition in Tauranga and sports camp which was in Matamata. When I'm not at school I do a lot of dancing, swimming, play water polo, netball and soccer. I like going for runs, surfing and going wharf jumping with my friends. It's what I call making the most out of life!

Josiah Va'ai Tupai - Deputy Head Boy & Pasifika Student Leader:  Talofa lava, my name is Josiah I am Samoan and I am the Deputy Head Boy and Pasifika Leader for this year.

I have a big family and have three siblings.  I enjoy performing arts and spending time with family and friends.

One of the many things I would love to work on this year is to organise fun activities for students so that they are happy to be here. This year is going to be the best year of GEIS because we have many cool ideas we have in store for you all.

Nabiha Eliyas - Deputy Head Girl:  I am super excited to have been elected for this role and really looking forward to working with the rest of the student leaders to help improve our school while still learning a lot about leadership along the way.

On the weekends, I usually go to Kiwi Valley Farm to volunteer. I really enjoy going there because I get to spend my whole day looking after farm animals and talking to different customers. I also love spending time with my family by going to the park or beach and playing with my little baby brother. I would say I have a pretty large family with my mum, dad and three siblings.

As I am part of the student leadership team this year, one of my goals is to become more involved within the West Auckland community. I feel this will be quite relevant to the school as we situated in a beautiful part of Auckland. Another one of my goals is to improve my leadership skills that will help me to achieve my future ambitions. Thank you

Sasha Tobin - Maori Student Leader:  Kia ora koutou ko Sasha Tobin toku ingoa. I am one of the two school’s Te Reo Maori representatives for 2020.

I live with both my parents and my 3 sisters. My life is always revolving around sports and Kapa haka. I am a current Year 8 student who got fully involved with what Glen Eden had to offer last year. I was a proud member of the Kapa Haka and the Pasifika group I was also lucky enough to be selected to attend sports camp, aims and many zone days.

This year as a Te Reo Maori representative I want to make sure everyone has a sense of belonging at GEIS and that everyone is proud of who they are and where they come from. I look forward to working with everyone this year.

Nga mihi nui Sasha

Jarom Rowell - Maori Student Leader: My name is Jarom Rowell and I am the Maori student leader for GEIS this year. My ethnicity is Maori, Samoan, Irish, English, and Jewish. I have four sisters which I love sometimes they can bug me.

I love all sports especially rugby because I like getting that awesome win for the team and MMA because I enjoy a good wrestle. When I’m not at school I love going to the beach to boogie board and surf. I love to play video games and go see my extended family who live in the Waikato.

What I would like to achieve as a student leader is to bring as much Te Reo Maori to this school as I possibly can and help create unity with others so this school and the pupils can become one.

Gezreyal Maiu'u - Pasifika Student Leader:  Talofa lava, I'm proud and honoured to be one of your Pasifika leaders for 2020. I am currently living with both my parents and my 5 loving siblings (3 brothers and 2 sisters) that always support me through everything that I do!

I am a student who is always striving to complete everything to the best of my ability, whether it's school work or sports. I love all sports, particularly gymnastics and athletics. Last year I participated in multiple sports zone days (including some sports I’ve never played before). As well as that, I was pleased to be selected for the girls rugby 7’s NZAIMS team and the Gladiators sports camp team. I also had the pleasure of being a part of the GEIS Pasifika group.

As a Pasifika leader I want to help all students with any problems or issues they may have as well as supporting them to stay on track with sport or school work. Also, don’t be shy to say ‘Hi’ and don’t be afraid to show who you really are and be proud to be yourself!. I’m extremely excited and looking forward to working with you amazing students this year!!

Sincerely, Gezreyal.
