Matariki at GEIS
A week of Matariki
Att GEIS, we have embraced all that Matariki stands for in our kura.
Ākonga (students) have had opportunities to reflect on the year so far and set goals for the year ahead. We have invited whānau in to celebrate ākonga with their mini-school exhibition of learning.
Ākonga have learnt the art of raranga (weaving) with Miss Lowe by creating Matariki whetu (stars) with harakeke flax. Miss Lowe taught them the Tikanga behind harvesting the harakeke, how to soften the flax, how to weave, and how to return the leftovers back to the Whenua (land).
Mini-schools have also been creating a kakahu (cloak) where students have designed a feather. These feathers will be collected up and woven together to be presented back to the school later in term 3.
Students have engaged in collaborative songs with Matariki music, cactus, and our school assembly.
A huge thank you to our Kaiako (teachers) who have embraced Matariki and designed engaging programmes for our ākonga.
Mānawatia a Matariki from us here at GEIS.
