Piha Learns about Safe Train Travel

Jacob Prisk —

Jemma Mohammed from Room 15 recounts this awesome learning opportunity about safe train travel.

Rooms 13, 14, 15, and 16 were given the opportunity to speak to a train driver, Constable Carl, and Ramona, an AT representative. We all met at the auditorium where Ramona educated us about some safety tips regarding trains. We learnt how to safely travel on a train as well as how to cross train tracks.

During our session, we did a small activity that taught us just how quiet trains are and the importance of attentiveness while crossing train tracks. Ramona instructed us to turn around while she played a clip of a train passing, however, there was a twist! Music was playing simultaneously to the train video, and we were instructed to raise our hand once we could hear the train coming. This video was made to replicate what it would be like to listen to music while crossing train tracks. Facing the wall, we waited for any audible clues to the train arriving, but none were present. Any second now, I thought. “Turn around!” Ramona instructed, beaming broadly, I gasped, the train in the video had already departed and none of us had heard it!

After that, a former train driver, Chris Leigh, gave us a few words on train safety as well as a short biography about him and his career. Chris had several fascinating stories to share with us about his experiences as a train driver as well as his passion for locomotives. Chris’ captivating speech sparked many student’s interest as many questions regarding past incidents, and the future of transport were asked.

Overall, I’m so grateful for the informative and exciting lesson, and I’m sure all of us will walk away a bit more prepared for train travel!
