Sports Camp - Onwards & Upwards

Vaimoana Vaai —

The only mistake I’ve made that relates to sports camp, was not trying out last year. So I say again, with full confidence and experience, I insist that all year 7s that are interested and play sports tryout next year. It will be the best week of your life!

My dream was to go to sports camp. This year, that dream came true. At sports camp, you learn your strengths and weaknesses, you learn to make friends, and learn new sports you never knew existed. This year I played human foosball, Netball, basketball, football, futsal, and learned how to play archery and wall-ball.

One of my favourite highlights was when our Warriors Wall-ball team won the finals against the Gladiators. Some other highlights are: learning and playing human foosball and nearly getting a bullseye in archery. Even due to COVID 19, this year has been an absolute blast, attending sports camp. Sports camp has been an amazing opportunity to try new sports and just have fun with the people around you, but most importantly, during your game time, it’s game on! I must say, from this year's experience, that GEIS is very competitive in sports but also loves to have heaps of fun while we’re at it.

If you are a year 7 next year, with all my experience from this year's sports camp, I insist that you take the chance and try. The only mistake I’ve made that relates to sports camp, was not trying out last year. So I say again, with full confidence and experience, I insist that all year 7s that are interested and play sports tryout next year. It will be the best week of your life!

From this years sports camp I’ve learned so much, from learning new sports to being there and supporting your whole team, but I’ve also learned that

“If you want to go fast go alone, but if you want it go far, go together.” - African proverb.

This will be forever the best week of my life.

Sports Camp at Totara Springs was an incredible experience. Not only did you get to play the codes that you are strong at but you get to try new things, For me it was petanque. The highlights for me were playing the sports I loved, but also building new relationships with people that I did not now. It was great to get out of my comfort zone and train with new people and share meal times and cabins with people I didn't know. Cheering other GEIS teams on was amazing, especially during the semi-finals and finals. It was nail biting stuff and fantastic to be part of it.

The training sessions were intense but were totally worth it. They helped develop our skills but also helped us build new relationships. I learnt how to play hockey, which is a sport I have never played before. I gained confidence in myself and learnt independence and organisation so that I didn't let the team down. I also learnt that I can sit still and meditate and that you need to be in the front of the line to get the best baking.

My advice if you want to take part next year is to work on your fitness and skills before trials and be confident to try new sports.. Attending sports camp will be an incredible memory you will have for the rest of your life and I am definitely hoping to go next year.
