German Style Handball visits Glen Eden Intermediate

By Slade Falconridge and Mercedes Hita, Room 23

On Thursday, 10th June some visitors from Germany came to teach us Handball. Not only did they teach us an Olympic sport but a new sport for us that is virtually unknown in NZ. They also taught us some German words like Guten Morgen which is Good Morning and links as left and recht which is right.

The handballs aren’t small, they are like mini soccer balls with big soccer goals. After all the instructions, we were told to do some warm ups like throwing the ball to each other and learning the words forward, backwards, throw and catch in German. We all got separated into 4 teams: green, yellow, red and orange. You are allowed to take three steps (eins, zwei, drei) and then throw the ball with one hand to your teammates. Then you can only score a goal from outside the circle.

The experience was agile, fun and a one time chance. We would really like to thank the coaches from Handball N.Z. and the Goethe Institute for giving us their time.
