GEIS Poetry Writing Competition

Samantha Balchin —

Our second writing competition for the year has come to a close- we have some amazing writers here at Glen Eden Intermediate!

Haiku, diamante, rhyming couplet, free verse- there was such a range of poetic styles entered into our competition.

Over 50 pieces of writing were submitted, which made the task of selecting a winner very challenging! Congratulations to all of our students that gave it a go. Here are our winners, along with excerpts from their winning pieces.

1st Oriana Jansen R5- 'If They See Me Then I Crumble To Dust'

Maybe one day, when we’re all old and grey
And look back on today with wise and seeing eyes
Maybe, just maybe, that will be the day when they see my actual face
When they see the real me, the inside
A flower bud blossoming out, reaching with outstretched petals,
Towards the giant world
When they see me, they will know,
That I am different, I am unique, I am me

2nd Naomi Rowllings R2- Midnight and Moonlight

The Darkness awoke
Wrapped himself in his cloak,
Vilely fashioned from
Cold mist and black smoke
Any hope that was left,
Any joy, any jest
Any light, any warmth
Disappeared, now bereft

3rd Lyla Atkins R18- A Facial Mole

I named him Dot, because he’s round
He’s philosophical, and very profound
I first noticed him when I was three,
He’s with me in all seasons, surf or ski
I love my Dot, he’s the best,
I truly am so very blessed.
