GEIS Sailors Succeed!

Jacob Prisk —

When many of our students are still in bed on a Sunday morning, Adam Bennett (Room 27), Jackson Grimmer (Room 32), and Megan Schussler (Room 33) are getting their sailing dinghies ready to race at the French Bay Yacht Club, summer and winter. This can be as early as 8am, depending on the high tide.

The consistency and dedication of these three GEIS Sailors resulted in them being awarded cups at the French Bay Yacht Club prizegiving on Saturday 31 July 2021.  The presentations were made by the Royal New Zealand Yacht Squadron (RNZYS) Commodore Aaron Young in the presence of the actual America's Cup.

Comments by Hamish Hall-Smith, FBYC Head Coach:

Megan Schussler has cleaned up junior sailing at FBYC in the past season, due to her quick learning and consistent sailing skills. She has shown great improvement in sailing her Optimist to the point where she was awarded 1st in Junior Racing in both the Optimist and Handicap divisions, as well as the Ladies Challenge Cup.

Adam Bennett was awarded Open Skiff Most Improved, showing the ability to handle his Open Skiff more confidently in challenging conditions towards the end of his first full season.

Jackson Grimmer has had a stellar season, starting the season in the Starling, moving into a Laser and finishing the season in a Farr3.7. Jackson was awarded the One Man Boat Cup for this success and we look forward to seeing more of him in the Farr3.7 through winter and next summer.
