GEIS is excited to have entered a three-year School Engagement and Development programme with one of our mana whenua, Te Kawerau ā Maki.
The intent of the School Engagement and Development Programme, Mana Kura, is to provide information and activities that contribute to strengthening educationally powerful connections to Te Kawerau ā Maki, enabling GEIS to develop our knowledge of historical and cultural connections to the whenua, and pass this knowledge on to our students.
This engagement will ensure our students will learn the stories of Te Kawerau ā Maki from mandated people of the iwi and our staff will have direct contact with Te Kawerau ā Maki for cultural support. Our school and tauira will be kaitiaki of some narratives related to this whenua, we are also hoping that our whānau can learn alongside us. With GEIS participating in this programme it will enable us to promote cultural competency in our staff and students and encourage participants to research further into their own culture.
Our first whānau hui for this year will be an opportunity to come in to our kura and listen and gain some knowledge about Te Kawerau a Māki.
